The Disability Community is the cozy online gathering place where Partners with common interests and challenges connect, share and support one another. Visitors also become well informed on a wide variety of disability-related categories by perusing the best articles and websites. On Primolicious/Disabilities you can find fellowship, enjoyment, involvement, solace, entertainment, acceptance, hope and encouragement.
My name is Gary Logsdon (
RollinLog) and I joined the
Disability Community unceremoniously on the evening of April 14, 1992. While cruising along the freeway I fell asleep at the wheel. The car swerved off the highway, barrel rolled numerous times, and finally came to rest upside down in a ditch. I was fortunate to survive the accident but my back was broken (T4), leaving me paralyzed from the chest down.
During my recovery, and in subsequent years, my family and I found the most useful advice and encouragement came from members of the Disability Community. This motivated us to provide an opportunity for many others to enjoy the benefits of interacting with this knowledgeable and caring community by utilizing the power of the Internet. We have undertaken the development of Primolicious/Disabilities to provide the Disability Community with an online gathering place where they can find a storehouse of useful information, and more importantly, connect with other folks like themselves to share stories, frustrations, expertise, triumphs and challenges. We strongly believe that this labor of love will enrich the lives of fellow members of our community.
The essence of Primolicious is captured in our slogan:
Information
The Internet is awash with content that is both beneficial and interesting to members of the Disability Community. Unfortunately this content is scattered over hundreds of sites and mixed in with other content of little or no value. At Primolicious/Disabilities, we find this content and make it readily available to you. We accomplish this in three ways:
- Centralize - Using numerous methods, including an intelligent aggregator, links to valuable content on hundreds of other websites can be accessed from this single site.
- Categorize - Separating all of the content into a variety of categories makes it possible for visitors to efficiently find the information that interests them most.
- Prioritize - Primolicious/Disabilities has a prioritization scheme that serves two important functions. Partners can rank the content so the best can be prominently designated and displayed. It also allows visitors to participate in policing the site by requesting that unacceptable content be removed. Both greatly impact the quality of the site.
Inspiration
We're not so naive as to think that every visitor our Disability Community will experience a life altering "mountain-top" experience. Initially, if a handful of folks leave the site each day feeling better than when they arrived, we would be pleased that the site was making a difference.
Clearly, what inspires individuals differs widely from person to person. This has motivated us to incorporate a wide variety of features in Primolicious with the hope that we can touch the hearts of the majority of our visitors.
We believe many individuals will be inspired by the chance to
give advice, compassion, companionship and encouragement to other members of the community. On Primolicious Disabilities, the Partners desiring to give can:
- Create a blog post that could positively impact other visitors
- Respond to blog posts in an encouraging and empathetic manner
- Foster useful discussions by posting compelling questions and topics
- Respond to discussion posts sharing their experiences, advice and expertise
- Create content that is useful to others
- Bring in Primo content from other sites
Others may be inspired by the opportunity to
receive assistance, knowledge, fellowship, support and encouragement from those who have been there and can understand and appreciate the challenges they are facing. The Partners wanting to receive can:
- Participate in discussions with others who are facing, or perhaps have overcome, similar challenges
- Explore the Fun section of the site and get involved in an activity or two that sounds interesting
- Become more well-informed about their disability
- Read and communicate directly with the writers of blog posts who are in a similar situation
- Write their own blog posts documenting their successes and challenges
- Receive messages from others on the site with their suggestions, support, and encouragement
For the Disability Community
Primolicious has been developed specifically for the Disability Community. This is not limited just to individuals with disabilities. It also includes their critical support group of family and friends as well as caregivers, advocates and medical professionals.
In addition to the broader Disability Community there are many other smaller communities on Primolicious/Disabilities formed around categories of common interest. For example, a community of Partners with spinal cord injury or a group of Partners who are passionate about quad rugby or winter sports.
With the assistance of our Partners, we continue to improve Primolicious so that it serves the members of Disability Community better than any other site on the Internet.
By the Disability Community
Who better to know what would enrich the lives of individuals in the Disability Community than those who live and breathe in that community every day? That is why Primolicious/Disabilities has been designed to foster and facilitate the addition of both linked and original content. We have intentionally called the individuals who join Primolicious "Partners" to reflect their critical role in the growth of our site. We will accomplish our mission only though the involvement of our Partners.
We understand that the participation of our Partners will vary greatly. The majority will be delighted just visiting the site, catching up on the news in their areas of interest, and occasionally voting for an article or making a comment. On the other end of the spectrum are the Partners who take ownership of a portion of the site. For example, a Partner who is passionate about handcycling may help grow that portion of the site dedicated to this craze, making it the place to visit on the web if you're a handcyclist. The Partner can accomplish this by linking in and writing compelling content, promoting interesting discussions, and inviting other enthusiasts to join him or her at Primolicious. If you would like to make a difference in the lives of others in our community,
get involved now.
