One of the most important things you have to do to grow beans (or peas) successfully is to provide them with proper growing support. There's many options out there but I finally focused on building a trellis out of PVC pipe with string mesh netting. Follow the directions below and you can have your own highly portable trellis.

Making Heavy Duty Tomato Cages

One of the important decisions you have to make when growing tomatoes is how you want to support them. There's several options but most have significant downsides. With that in mind, I decided to make my own heavy duty cages. They didn't take very long to make, are much studier than store bought ones, and in subsequent years there's no labor involved in using them. Best of all, I made 20 cages for only $80, including the bolt cutters!

Reclaiming a Bed That Has Gone to the Weeds

One of our flower beds hadn't been touched in a year or so. It was getting pretty weedy and the grass was starting to take it back over. We decided to re-edge it using red "scalloped" bricks and to apply both gardening cloth and mulch to it. These made a dramatic difference in the look of the bed and greatly lowered the energy to maintain it. It's a pretty easy process that I've outlined below.
